How to Ask a Teacher for a College Recommendation Letter (With a Brag Sheet Template)

Most US universities want two teacher recommendations and one from your counselor. Some allow an extra "other" recommender. The letters are read for one thing: evidence about you that the rest of the file cannot provide. That means the choice of teacher and the material you give them matter more than how much they like you.

Which teachers to ask

The best recommender is a teacher who:

• Taught you in Grade 11 or 12 (Grade 10 is acceptable if the teacher also knows you now)
• Teaches a subject related to your intended major (one of the two should)
• Has seen you do something specific: a project, a turnaround, a question you would not let go of
• Will write with detail, not adjectives

Pairing that works for most applicants: one STEM, one humanities, or one in your major and one who knows you differently (a club sponsor who also taught you, a teacher who saw you struggle and recover).

Do not choose a teacher because of a high grade alone. A 57% in Physics from a teacher who saw you work hard is still a 57% in the transcript, and the letter cannot change that. Choose the teacher who can say something a reader will remember.

When to ask

Before the end of Grade 11 if you can, and no later than the first two weeks of Grade 12. Teachers with a reputation for good letters get asked by 20 students. Early requests get more attention.

How to ask

In person, then in writing. Something like:

I'm applying to universities in the US this autumn and I'd like to ask if you would write me a recommendation. Your class was where I [specific thing: figured out how to structure an argument / learned to redo an experiment until it worked]. I'll send a brag sheet and my deadlines this week, and I'll add you as a recommender on the Common App.

Then send the brag sheet within 48 hours.

The brag sheet

A brag sheet is one page. It gives the teacher facts to use so the letter is specific. Include:

1. Basics. Your intended major, the earliest deadline (usually 1 November), the number of schools.

2. Three moments from their class. A project, a discussion, an assignment, a time you were wrong and fixed it. One sentence each, with the date or term. This is the most important section; it gives the teacher scenes to write.

3. Two things you want the letter to show. Not "hard-working." Something like "that I ask questions until I understand the mechanism, not just the formula" or "that I improved from a 5 to a 7 by changing how I revise."

4. Context they may not know. A school move, a family situation, a job. One line each, only if it shaped your work in their class.

5. One or two activities connected to their subject. So the teacher can say "she brought this into class."

Leave out: your full activities list, your GPA, and awards from other subjects. The counselor's letter covers those.

After they agree

• Add them in the Common App under Recommenders and make sure the invitation email reached them.
• Send a short reminder two weeks before the first deadline.
• Thank them in writing after decisions come in, whatever the result.

The "other" recommender

Some schools accept a third letter from someone outside school: a research mentor, an employer, a coach. Use it only if that person knows you well in a context the teachers cannot cover. A letter from a program assistant who met you for six weeks adds nothing; a letter from a professor who supervised your research does.
