College Application Timeline for International Students (2026-27 Cycle)

A month-by-month plan for applying to US universities from outside the US, from the August Common App reset to the May reply date. Testing, transcripts, recommendations, visas, and the deadlines students miss.

International applicants have the same deadlines as US students and three extra jobs: testing logistics, document translation and certification, and a visa. Here is the cycle laid out so nothing lands in the same week.

August 2026

  • The Common App resets on 1 August. Create your account, fill in Profile, Family, and Education.
  • Ask your two teacher recommenders now, before they are asked by twenty other students. Give each a brag sheet.
  • Confirm your counselor has your Grade 9-11 transcripts and knows your school's document process (some schools need weeks to produce certified copies).
  • Draft the personal statement. It should exist as a full draft by the end of the month.

September

  • Register for the October SAT if you need a score for a school that requires one. Check each school's testing policy for the 2026-27 cycle; several have reinstated requirements.
  • Finalise the college list: 10-14 schools, with at least three where admission is likely.
  • Decide your early strategy (one ED or REA school, plus EA schools).
  • Start the supplemental essays for early-round schools. "Why Us" essays take longer than you think.
  • English-proficiency test (TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo) booked if your school's instruction language is not English or the school requires it regardless.

October

  • Personal statement final. Read it aloud once.
  • 15 October: early deadlines at some schools (UNC, Georgia Tech EA, UT Austin priority).
  • Activities list and honors complete. Check hour totals.
  • Predicted grades: your counselor uploads these with the school report. Ask what they will be before they are sent.
  • Financial aid: CSS Profile opens 1 October for schools that use it; international applicants must submit it by the ED or EA deadline to be considered for need-based aid.

November

  • 1 November: most ED I, REA, and EA deadlines. Submit a day early; the site slows down.
  • 30 November: University of California application closes. No early round.
  • 15 November: a second wave of EA deadlines (Michigan is 1 November; some others fall here).
  • After submitting, verify every school's portal shows your documents received.

December

  • ED I and REA decisions arrive mid-month.
  • Deferred or denied early: adjust your regular list before the holidays.
  • Continue regular-decision supplements. Most are due 1-5 January.

January

  • 1-5 January: regular decision and ED II deadlines.
  • Send first-term Grade 12 grades to schools that ask for a mid-year report.
  • Deferred applicants: one update letter, new information only.

February to March

  • ED II decisions in February.
  • Regular decisions from mid-March to early April.
  • Financial aid letters arrive with or shortly after admission.

April

  • Compare offers. Admitted-student days are worth attending if you can.
  • Request an aid review if a competing offer is materially better and the school is your first choice.

May and after

  • 1 May: commit to one school and pay the deposit. Withdraw from the others.
  • Request your I-20 from the school; you cannot start the visa process without it.
  • Pay the SEVIS fee, book the F-1 visa interview. Summer slots fill early in many countries; book in May.
  • Final transcript and IB or A-level results go to the school in July.

Deadlines international students most often miss

  1. CSS Profile by the early deadline. Missing it usually means no need-based aid for that round.
  2. Certified translations of transcripts not in English.
  3. Test score sends. Scores must be sent from the testing organisation; a screenshot does not count.
  4. Mid-year report in January.
  5. Visa interview booking. The gap between an I-20 and the first available interview date can be months.
